Procedure

The Tiptree Clocks procedure for repair/service is as follows:

  • Carefully inspect the clock case for any visible damage
  • Inspect the movement as best as possible before removing from the case
  • Remove the movement from the case and carefully inspect the movement for any obvious damag
  • Dismantle the movement looking for causes of malfunction and damage during the dismantle
  • Using a large magnifier, carefully inspect the parts for damage
  • Burnish (polish) the pivots (bearing parts of the arbors (shafts)) to remove any grooves and wear marks to produce a smooth, hardened bearing surface
  • Clean the parts
  • Re-assemble the movement and using a large magnifier inspect for wear in the holes in the clock plates where the arbors fit
  • Fit bushes to any worn holes (bushes are small brass inserts that restore the size of the hole in the clock plate)
  • Broach (ream) the holes in the new bushes to a size to suit the free running of the arbor
  • Clean the parts again
  • Re-assemble the movement and make sure all the arbors rotate freely
  • Oil the pivots
  • Re-assemble and set-up any striking and chiming mechanisms
  • Put the clock "in-beat" (make sure the "tick-tock" is even)
  • Set the time and put the clock on test
  • Whilst on test adjust the clock as required to keep good time
  • After a suitable time on test, and as long as no problems occur, the movement is put back in the clock case and put back on test to confirm the clock is working correctly and keeping good time

Tiptree Clocks take numerous photographs of the clock before and during the dismantling procedure which could be of use to a customer if at a later date any evidence of the appearance of the clock is required for an insurance claim.

Any work outside of normal repair/service procedure, e.g. a new mainspring, would be extra and if the cost is going to be more than 10% of the estimate price Tiptree Clocks would contact you before proceeding.

Tiptree Clocks can also clean and polish cases at extra cost.

Movements can also be polished and lacquered at extra cost.
